![]() ![]() Hythloday, we learn, sailed the world alongside the great historical explorer Amerigo Vespucci, and he even traveled to the New World by way of Asia. More, Giles, and Hythloday walk together to More’s house, and in his garden the three men talk at length. More is returning home from church one day when he runs into Giles, who is speaking with an old man called Raphael Hythloday. More then travels to Antwerp, where he takes up residence and befriends an honest, learned citizen of that city named Peter Giles. The tone of this statement, plus the fact that he debates this point with Thomas More and Peter Giles for so long, shows how strongly he feel this way. When Utopia opens, the character Thomas More is in the Netherlands, serving as an ambassador sent by King Henry VIII of England to hold negotiations concerning the English wool trade. Influencing policy indeed! You wouldn't have a chance!" (1.38) "Either will seduce you, or, if you remain honest and innocent, you will be made a screen for the folly of others. Here's what he thinks the only two options are: He's particularly hung up on the idea that philosophy-which he thinks = morality-is totally, 100% irreconcilable with the political world. And Hythloday is no small reason for that, because philosophy, and leading a "philosophical-life" is very important to him. You've probably got the idea by this point that philosophy is a big part of Utopia. You had to be pretty on top of things to know about them both. It's also just a way of making Hythloday sound even more language-savvy and smart since Hebrew and Ancient Greek were two "dead" languages that had only been recently rediscovered in the Renaissance. Does Hythloday somehow reconcile these two irreconcilable, yet equally important, world-views? Maybe. His two names together also suggest an uncomfortable tension that More would have thought a lot about between the Christian world and the pagan (Greek) world. Raphael was one the most famous archangels (the closest advisors/messengers to God) so it is definitely playing with Hythloday's role as both a messenger and as someone worried about how he can best advise people in power. Okay, so what about his first name, why biblical? That's also not entirely clear. Are we supposed to take this guy seriously, or is this some kind of joke? It's hard to say, but More clearly wants us to be keeping in mind that what Hythloday is describing is completely made-up. One reason it's weird is that it's a kind of cultural mash-up: Raphael is biblical (Hebrew) while Hythloday is a Greek compound meaning "expert in nonsense." Huh? Yep, just to add to the confusion surrounding his character, he's given a last name that seems to undermine his authority as a speaker. ![]() And um, can we say, not even a little bit Portuguese. Our protagonist Raphael Hythloday is no exception, and if you've been thinking his name sounds kind of funny, you're not alone. Quite a lot actually, especially if you're in the world of Thomas More's Utopia where almost every invented name is some kind of pun/joke/reference. For more on Hythloday's appearance, check out " The Weary Traveler" in Symbols, Imagery, and Allegory. Sunburns, beards, and cloaks are all conventional ways of signaling that this is not someone from around here. If he's starting to remind you a bit of Robinson Crusoe, you're not wrong. The point is, there is something intentionally mysterious about our man Hythloday that's meant to lend him and the story he tells an aura of excitement.Įven his appearance has some of that mysteriousness going on: "The stranger had a sunburned face, a long beard and a cloak hanging loosely from his shoulders from his face and dress, I took him to be a ship's captain" (1.9). He doesn't appear to have a family, we're not really sure how old he is, and we don't even know his favorite color (okay, maybe the last one is asking too much). Other than that, we don't get to learn a whole lot about our friend Hythloday's personal life. Portugal was considered a country full of explorer-types. We know that he's Portuguese and has sailed with the famous (historical) Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. Unlike many people, he sees hoity-toity scholarship and down-and-dirty action as two equally important ways of learning about the world. ![]() He's a total bibliophile (book-lover), philosopher (wisdom-lover), and has mad ancient Greek skills, in addition to being completely down for adventure. Hythloday is not your average world-traveler. Okay, now that we have that under our belts, let's move on to our main man. At times, the characters seem to function more as tools for expressing certain ideas rather than fully, psychologically imagined people. We don't hear about anyone's childhood, their (non)relationship with their parents, anything about their love life. First, a caveat: Utopia is not a character-driven story the way, oh, Hamlet or even Harry Potter are. ![]() ![]() ![]() Please read through the options I’ve included in this email. Sprint racing? Well, it feels like it’s in the wrong game. Path Finder events are a handful of hill climb time-attacks in a specialty rock bouncer but, while these courses are the steepest and narrowest, they don’t really require a particularly finessed approach so I didn’t find them as interesting to tackle as I thought I would. Land Rush and Stampede in particular both blur into one for me, and Rally Raid doesn’t feel much different to those either. I’ve been playing Dirt 5 for a week and there are still event types I can’t really tell the difference between. By Luke Reilly, JScore: 9.2 Read the full Dirt 4 Review My key criticism of the career mode is that the variety it appears to offer doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny. Accessible yet tough and grimy yet gorgeous, Dirt 4 sets a new standard in rally racing – and its well-considered career mode and endless stages inject it with tremendous stamina. Back then Codemasters’ rally games were the yardstick against which all other racers with off-road aspirations were measured (at least up until the likes of Richard Burns Rally and WRC: Rally Evolved). Hearing Grist’s pace notes again – a voice drilled into my brain in the late ’90s and early 2000s via my ravenous consumption of all games beginning with the word ‘Colin’ – has taken me back nearly 20 years. It’s perhaps symbolic that Codemasters has included Colin McRae’s old co-driver in Dirt 4 for the first time in one of its rally games since Colin McRae Rally 2005, because Dirt 4 very much feels like a return to the good old days of the series. It was particularly entertaining hearing the highly-recognisable voices of video game VO veterans Troy Baker and Nolan North regularly sniping at each other in the guise of two rival races. Hosted by Donut Media presenters James Pumphrey and Nolan Sykes, it’s a low-fi approach – no character models, no cutscenes – but even though the segments are entirely inessential I have to admit I bought into the silly back-and-forth and listened to every one of them. ![]() ![]() There’s even a light story woven throughout the career which unfolds exclusively in a series of in-game podcast snippets sprinkled between events as you progress. With Dirt Rally 2.0 competently overseeing that department nowadays, Dirt 5’s career mode is now an arcade-oriented mosaic of mostly pack racing events across tracks in 10 global locations, including New York, Arizona, China, Norway, Brazil, Greece, South Africa, Morocco, Italy, and Nepal. Gone, too, is Dirt 4’s custom rally stage generator tool, and with it, any regular point-to-point rallying at all, actually. There are certainly differences in the way a custom-built buggy tackles terrain compared to, say, a rear-wheel drive retro rally car (and there are also some subtle variations in grip across the different surface types – especially ice) but overall it’s a bit more basic and I found the handling quickly tameable. Built on the bones of Codemasters Cheshire’s Onrush, Dirt 5 actually doesn’t feel anything like its direct predecessor, ditching its two-pronged “simulation” versus “gamer” approach to handling options for a single, easy-to-grasp driving model. Land Rush HourIronically enough, one key game Dirt 5 roundly ignores is Dirt 4. This cocktail of influences combines for a well-executed racer, albeit one that seems content to iterate rather than innovate. There’s even a touch of Trackmania’s custom track builder and some subtle hints of SEGA Rally Revo, RalliSport Challenge, and Gravel to boot. ![]() There’s a heavy handful of Dirt 2’s brashness, a dash of Dirt 3’s gymkhana mode, and a limited sprinkle of MotorStorm’s rough-and-ready brand of fender bending (Dirt 5 even features racing in Monument Valley, the location of the original MotorStorm). That said, Driveclub is far from the single influence on Dirt 5. This game handles night lighting and extreme weather with particular panache. Like Driveclub, Dirt 5 is a mix of doorhandle-to-doorhandle arcade pack racing and bleeding-edge visuals. ![]() However, it makes a lot more sense when you consider Dirt 5 was developed by Codemasters Cheshire – the studio formerly known as Evolution, which made Driveclub before being cut loose from Sony and scooped up by Codemasters in 2016. For a series with its own long and firmly established history, that Driveclub comparison I just threw at you may come as a slight curveball. ![]() ![]() Various of stepping piezoelectric actuators can be further classified into three motion types, involving inchworm type, friction-inertia type, and parasitic type. Hence, stepping principle has attracted much attention in the piezoelectric actuator development in the recent decades. By this way, high-precision positioning accuracy can be achieved in long working stroke. ![]() Stepping principle realizes the long working stroke by step displacement accumulation. However, the interfacial wear and heat generation are lack of adequate solution to date, especially in high-speed & full-load motion. Ultrasonic principle utilizes the resonance of stators to drive the slider/rotor. Therefore, the direct-driven principle gradually loses its popularity in the recent years. However, it is still not long enough for most of the applications, and furthermore complicated flexure hinge-based compliant mechanisms deteriorate the static and dynamic characteristics of the piezoelectric actuators, reducing structural stiffness and intrinsic resonant frequency. The maximum working stroke is extended to tens of micrometers. With the assistance of flexure hinge-based compliant mechanisms, it is found that the working stroke can be amplified up to several times of the original displacement of a single piezoelectric element. Direct-driven principle is the initial application in piezoelectric actuators. In order to extend the working stroke of piezoelectric elements, several methods have been proposed and investigated, which can be classified according to the motion principle into the direct-driven principle, ultrasonic principle, and stepping principle. The applications of such positioning stages are only employed within limited scopes due to micro-scale working stroke. Generally, restricted by the inverse piezoelectric effect of current piezoelectric materials, the displacement of a single piezoelectric element is limited within tens of nanometers to several micrometers. ![]() ![]() Up to now, various of piezoelectric-driven positioning systems with flexure hinge-based compliant mechanisms have been developed and widely applied in many scientific and industrial applications, such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), fast tool servo (FTS) single-point diamond turning and optical adaptive mirror, et al. The piezoelectric actuator is one of the potential alternatives for high-resolution precision positioning systems. Most of the conventional actuators can hardly satisfy the requirements on positioning resolution for precision positioning systems, such as hydro-motors, direct/alternating current motors, pneumatic elements, et al., even with the merits of large output capability, fast response, and long working stroke. Nowadays, long working stroke precision positioning systems with micro-to-nano resolution are significantly demanded in many scientific studies and industrial fields. It is expected that this chapter can assist relevant researchers to understand the basic principle and recent development of PMP piezoelectric actuators. Finally, the current existing issues and some potential research topics in the future are discussed. ![]() The emphasis of this chapter includes three key points, the structural optimization, output characteristic analysis and performance enhancement. This chapter is aimed to introduce the basic definition and typical features of the parasitic motion principle (PMP), followed by summarizing the recent developments and achievements of PMP piezoelectric actuators. Among them, inchworm type, friction-inertia type, and parasitic type are three main types of stepping piezoelectric actuators. Stepping piezoelectric actuators have achieved significant improvements to satisfy the urgent demands on precision positioning with the capability of long working stroke, high accuracy and micro/nano-scale resolution, coupled with the merits of fast response and high stiffness. ![]() ![]() What business amenities are offered by the Six Flags Lodge & Indoor Waterpark - Park Access Included?.Guests at the Six Flags Lodge & Indoor Waterpark - Park Access Included also enjoy the Seasonal Serenity Facial, which uses products that are in season at the time to clean your pores and leave you with glowing skin. Three minutes later, Maddison kept an attack alive after Arsenal had failed to clear, then crossed from the left for Son to equalise.Īfter the teams exchanged goals in two second-half minutes, the game became more transitional. Tottenham’s counter-attacks continued to threaten, however. With their tails up, Postecoglou’s team began to play in behind earlier and build pressure. These two combined well to set up Johnson on 39 minutes, who was denied by a superb save from David Raya. Tottenham’s chances mostly came from combinations between Kulusevski and dropping centre-forward Son (above). By contrast, on Tottenham’s left, Brennan Johnson was forced to work back more due to Saka’s threat. The right winger had space to break into while Zinchenko recovered back (below). With Zinchenko inverting and Arsenal focused more on their right side, Spurs’ counter-attacks were most efficient through Dejan Kulusevski. Having Vieira in the wide-left channel allowed Arsenal to attack around both sides of Tottenham’s back line. Maintaining width on this side was also important, given that left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko inverted. Left-sided eight Fábio Vieira moved wide left to accompany these rotations and provide attacking width. The tapes dive deep into Nilsen’s twisted life and mind as he recalls how he was able to commit each violent crime and sweep himself under the radar for years. The audio was recorded on cassette tapes while Nilsen sat in prison. The documentary film is directed by Michael Harte and includes real recordings of Nilsen himself, which have never been publicly released until now. Nilsen was given a life sentence and died on at the age of 72. Since Nilsen did not recall all of his victim’s names, the police were only able to arrest him for the murders of victims with confirmed identities. He would then resort to drowning his unconscious victims in his bath or sink.Īfter being arrested, Nilsen willingly told the police that he had rotting corpses in his home and claimed to have killed 15 or 16 men since 1978. Once inside, Nilsen would strangle his victims until they died or became unconscious. He would lure his victims into his home with the promise of alcohol and/or shelter. Nilsen’s infamous killing spree occurred between 19 while he lived in North London. As one of Britain’s most notorious serial killers, Nilsen is responsible for the confirmed death of 12 victims (all men or young boys) and the attempted murder of several others. Netflix’s latest documentary, Memories of a Murderer: The Nilsen Tapes, follows the true and horrific story of Dennis Nilsen. ![]() |
